چکیده

Context. Chromospheric activity produces both photometric and spectroscopic variations that can be mistaken as planets. Large spots crossing the stellar disc can produce planet-like periodic variations in the light curve of a star. These spots clearly affect the spectral line profiles, and their perturbations alter the line centroids creating a radial velocity jitter that might “contaminate” the variations induced by a planet. Precise chromospheric activity measurements are needed to estimate the activity-induced noise that should be expected for a given star. Aims. We obtain precise chromospheric activity measurements and projected rotational velocities for nearby (d ≤ 25 pc) cool (spectral types F to K) stars, to estimate their expected activity-related jitter. As a complementary objective, we attempt to obtain relationships between fluxes in different activity indicator lines, that permit a transformation of traditional activity indicators, i.e., Ca ii H & K lines, to others that hold noteworthy advantages. Methods. We used high resolution (∼50 000) echelle optical spectra. Standard data reduction was performed using the IRAF echelle package. To determine the chromospheric emission of the stars in the sample, we used the spectral subtraction technique. We measured the equivalent widths of the chromospheric emission lines in the subtracted spectrum and transformed them into fluxes by applying empirical equivalent width and flux relationships. Rotational velocities were determined using the cross-correlation technique. To infer activity-related radial velocity (RV) jitter, we used empirical relationships between this jitter and the RHK index. Results. We measured chromospheric activity, as given by different indicators throughout the optical spectra, and projected rotational velocities for 371 nearby cool stars. We have built empirical relationships among the most important chromospheric emission lines. Finally, we used the measured chromospheric activity to estimate the expected RV jitter for the active stars in the sample.

How accurately can we age-date solar-type dwarfs using activity/rotation diagnostics?

It is well established that activity and rotation diminishes during the life of sun-like main sequence (∼F7-K2V) stars. Indeed, the evolution of rotation and activity among these stars appears to be so deterministic that their rotation/activity diagnostics are often utilized as estimators of stellar age. A primary motivation for the recent interest in improving the ages of solar-type field dwar...

Chromospheric Activity in Metal-Poor Dwarfs

We have obtained echelle spectra with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of the MgII 2800 Å region of ten stars whose metallicities range from 1/300 to 1/3 that of the Sun, and whose space velocities suggest a halo or old thick-disk origin. Spectra of all ten show doublepeaked emission in the MgII core, very much like the quiet Sun. A halfdozen apparently non-rotating stars were observed more tha...

The Age – Activity – Rotation Relationship in Solar – Type Stars . ⋆

Measured from high–resolution spectra, we present Ca II K line chromospheric fluxes in 35 G dwarf stars of 5 open clusters to determine the age–activity–rotation relationship from the young Hyades and Praesepe (0.6 Gyr) to the old M 67 (∼ 4.5 Gyr) through the two intermediate age clusters IC 4651 and NGC 3680 (∼ 1.7 Gyr). The full amplitude of the activity index within a cluster is slightly abo...

Improved Age Estimation for Solar-type Dwarfs Using Activity-rotation Diagnostics

While the strong anti-correlation between chromospheric activity and age has led to the common use of the Ca II H & K emission index (R HK = LHK/Lbol) as an empirical age estimator for solar type dwarfs, existing activity-age relations produce implausible ages at both high and low activity levels. We have compiled R HK data from the literature for young stellar clusters, richly populating for t...

The Solar Surface Di erential Rotation from Disk-Integrated Chromospheric Fluxes

Disk-integrated solar chromospheric Ca II K-line (3933.68 A) uxes have been measured almost daily at Sacramento Peak Observatory since 1977. Using observing windows selected to mimic seasonal windows for chromospheric measurements of lower main-sequence stars such as those observed by Mount Wilson Observatory's HK Project, we have measured the solar rotation from the modulation of the Ca II K-l...
